Synarchy, as it has at times been referred to, is not unique to Steiner: Peter Deunov in Bulgaria, and beforehand Saint-Yves d’Alveydre in France, amongst other esotericists, all propounded a view of social organisation in a somewhat similar manner. Its essence is encapsulated and is well expressed in one of Rudolf Steiner's statements on the social realm:

As we reflect and observe history and which of three independent streams within the social fabric tend to dominate, we see in what manner that dominance leads to unhealthy social states.

Not that long ago, at least in Europe, the Church wielded too much influential directing power over the judicial and the economic. At another time under feudal rule, the judicial wielded imbalanced power. In our age, the economic has assumed undue power over the other two areas of life.

Each of these three different areas may be said to have an ideal that, when applied to another sector, wreaks havoc.

The judicial-political sector is healthy when a sense for people's equality is living; the educational-religious-artistic sector when freedom or liberty is poignantly blossoming; and the agricultural-economic-distributive sector when a sense for the brother/sisterhood of all is embraced. To paraphrase another anthroposophist (whose name escapes me), there is a need for individual freedom in the cultural-spiritual sphere, for community in economic life, and for equality in the judicial sphere.

Steiner's Threefold Social Order

In Towards Social Renewal (1919), Rudolf Steiner demonstrates and states that a healthy society needs these three relatively independent spheres, each governed by its own guiding principle rather than being fused. The cultural-spiritual sphere (education, religion, science, art) flourishes centred on freedom, since creative and intellectual life withers under external control.

The rights/political sphere (law, government, defense of civil rights) rests on equality, since everyone stands equal before the law regardless of talent or wealth. The economic sphere (production, trade, consumption) is best guided by brotherhood/fraternity, since economic life is inherently interdependent and cooperative. Steiner pointed out that these directly reflect the French Revolutionary insights of liberty, equality, and fraternity - yet also pointing that modern states incorrectly apply the three principles uniformly across all three spheres — imposing "equality" on cultural life, or "freedom" on economics — producing the social tensions we can easily see reflected in our own time, and leading to similar the conditions that led to WWI (which occurred during his lifetime).

Synarchy

Synarchy predates Steiner, originating with the French esotericist Joseph Alexandre Saint-Yves d'Alveydre in the 1880s. He proposed it as an alternative to both anarchy and hierarchy: a society governed by three coordinated councils or ‘chambers’ — economic, judicial/political, and spiritual/educational — ideally guided by initiates or awakened humanity with esoteric knowledge. Synarchy shares Steiner's tripartite structure (economy, rights/law, culture/spirit) yet also reflects a more explicitly Platonic-Rosicrucian-influenced tradition, envisioning guidance by enlightened philosophers rather than Steiner's emphasis on associative self-organisation within each sphere. It is evident that Steiner drew on Saint-Yves reflections within the esoteric development of the times.

Within the Economic Chamber, there is an engagement in production, trade, and resource distribution. Agriculture, crafts, industry, and science are coordinated to the benefit of all, preventing where possible poverty and waste. In contrast, the Judicial Chamber is there to maintain justice and to resolve disputes based on principles derived on ‘divine law’ that are morally grounded. The focuses remains maximising the ongoing place for individuals within an ethically just community. Within the Spiritual Chamber, education, religion, and ethical principles are guided to their fruition. This provides for the development of people in understanding sacred sciences, philosophy, and virtue, keeping harmony between the sacred and secular functions of society.

Peter Deunov's Parallel Views

Deunov (Beinsa Douno), in Bulgaria and whose life-span very much overlapped Steiner’s, with both being aware of each other’s existence and inner work, articulated a broadly similar triadic vision, though framed even more spiritually and cosmically rather than as institutional policy. The focus centered on Love, Wisdom, and Truth as the fundamental divine principles humanity needs to develop and truly embody. Deunov emphasised, throughout his work, the Christ of Love which fills every heart, the Christ of Wisdom which illuminates every mind, and the Christ of Truth which liberates and elevates the world. Deunov, as did Steiner, envisioned a coming ‘New Culture’, or future Slavic culture or Age of Aquarius built on universal brotherhood, where these three principles would harmonise human social, intellectual, and moral life.

Personal Development, Integration, and Personal Healing practices have traditionally focussed on spiritual formation which includes facing and coming to terms with one’s own life-journey.

In the manner that I work, I include practices inclusive of imagery and meditation, the uses of certain extracts such as Blue Lotus and Cacao preparations, and some suggested movements and/or Breathwork. If you are interested in finding out more, please be in contact.

a) intense session using ceremonial style Cacao and Blue Lotus (exchange is $590 individuals; $700 couples; $210 pp for groups of between 7 and 15). Each session lasts between 2-6 hours;

b) following an initial consultation, deepening work requires commitment for a once-a-month meeting for either 6 or 12 months (renewable if desired) - exchange is $260 per session, each approximately 1-2 hours.
