Following a recent conversation on past-life memories, I decided to put in writing one of the events that took place some years ago… nearly 39 to be exact. In Melbourne, in 1987, back in the days when Melbourne was relatively safe for anyone to even walk through its streets at night and car-jacks weren’t thought of, a young man who had been refused military academy entry decided to open fire on passers-by in Hoddle Street on the northern edges of Melbourne’s inner suburb of Clifton Hill.

Seven people died, including a very close friend (Vesna Markovska). At the time, I was taking a university break and doing a silent retreat at a monastery outside of Melbourne, so didn’t hear about it until the very day of her funeral nearly a week later. This, it should be remembered, is pre-internet days (though a precursor to even ARPAnet through universities existed for those of us who had access to it). And before what we now consider mobile phones (even in the 1990s you were fortunate to have occasion to use a ‘brick’ mobile phone the size and weight of a car battery!).

Back to the main story… not that long after those deaths, another shooting happened in a building in Melbourne, indirectly affecting me as the person I was seeing at the time worked there (these occurred approximately ten years before the most pronounced one of the times at Port Arthur in Tasmania).

A couple of years following the Melbourne events - still very much impacting especially those of us directly affected, I recall having an experience I will briefly mention below, and speaking with my mother about what I had just seen ‘in the spiritual realm’.

Perhaps I should here also mention that both my mother (who was at the time in Vanuatu) and I (in Melbourne) were witness to my grandfather’s passing (a couple of days before she received a telegram to the effect) - so I knew that she would understand what I had seen: A descent from the spiritual realm of Vesna into a new birth, and the reason I mentioned it to her was also that I saw this taking place in Vanuatu or thereabouts.

At the time, I was not aware that my sister was giving birth… and called her daughter Vanessa - a name so close… but more to the point, my mother then told me that this baby’s birthmark at the back of her lungs looked like a gun-shot wound, which could now be explained. I still have no idea if my sister knew of my communication with my mother at that time….

So here is an example (amongst others), I would suggest, that supports or provides some kind of evidence for re-incarnation. Not that those amongst us who have various experiential gnostic insight into such require it.

The more important question, I would suggest, is what or how to work with people with whom we have deep pre-life connection into this current life. There is no doubt at all in my mind that I have met and walked alongside others with whom I have shared previous lives. There is also no doubt in my being that there are trajectories with which we are presented that need to be co-travelled (for how long a time… there is always an inner freedom involved). And there is no doubt that life presents us with ‘work’ or development that sees individuals brought together for specific life-time purposes that may or may not be objectively or consciously obvious.

Of what does in incarnation consist? there is both a vertical and horizontal entwining that takes place. At the ‘vertical’ level, we are spiritual beings that incarnate from life to life into bodies - we become enfleshed. With this we bring elements of karmic deeds from our past as well as tasks from the future that draws us towards those ends.

At the ‘horizontal’ level, we incarnate within genetic and cultural streams, with the limitations and opportunities these provide. We undoubtedly ‘carry’ the various epigenetic influences of our parents and parents’ parents, as well as the socio-cultural tapestry into which we (and they) reside.

It can be quite a task to honour both the vertical aspect of our incarnation with those with whom we have tasks and lives to unfurl, as well as to maintain conscious acceptance and honouring of the genetic and socio-cultural limitations or expectations of those streams. I have even known of instances in which I am confident (even if simultaneously accepting of the possibility of error) that a couple may have been brought together at the behest of the being about to incarnate to maximise their own genetic opportunities, without the biological parents’ continuing or ongoing relationship - to be clear, I do consider that such would normally, in other words in most cases, be best in the interest of all concerned.

Journeys to travel within this lifetime are vast and many for many of us, and there is no doubt that the more one seeks to be of service to others and the spiritual world, we remain both exceptionally supported as well as being in situations that can at times be challenging.

Again, to honour truth, wisdom, love - these form the foundational impulse to unfurl understanding and insight into the world as just, and the development of our own inner virtues.
